Trail along the ridge of the Senio and the Santerno Valleys
Lungo il Crinale tra Senio e Santerno
Itinerary: Passo del Prugno – Monte Battaglia – Valmaggiore – Macchia dei Cani – Cimone della Bastia – Poggio dell’Altello – Ronchi di Berna.
The trail follows the Santerno-Senio ridge of the Apennine Hills.
Most of the trail follows the antique road of the valley - which was substituted by the State Road Montanara during the last century – and ends inthe Tuscuny Region. You cross marly/sandstone areas and woods, vast chestnut and beech groves, and you cross numerous streams, especially in the Tuscany Region.
There are also some areas of historical interest: Monte Battaglia – a dominant and strategic peek as the remains of a recently renovated XIV century fortress clearly demonstrate and the impressive monument dedicated to the soldiers of the Second WW; the church of Valmaggiore (recently under going renovation), and which also has a beautiful panorama, and the remains of Castrum Paventae near Monte della Croce.
From Passo del Prugno you follow the road for Monte Battaglia. You go along the base of the hill and you follow the small gulf up to the church of Valmaggiore. Along the trail you will reach the sandstone stairs of the Macchia dei Cani, which lead to the fields of Faggiola.
Once you pass the State Road which connects Palazzuolo to Coniale, you follow the rolling hill landscape into the Tuscany region.
