The Frattona Woods (on foot)
Il Bosco della Frattona

Itinerary: Frattona Woods

As soon as you leave Imola, going towards Montecatone, you reach the woods of the Frattona, an Orientated Natural Reserve, which was founded in 1984.

The various features of the woods can be visited following an interesting trail, which from the parking lot brings to the western part of the woods. The aim of this Reserve is to safeguard a part of the original vegetation of this area, which today is mainly surrounded by cultivated fields. On the surface of this land the “yellow sands” of Imola can still be seen – these yellowish-golden sands date back about one million years when the Pianura Padana – the Padana flatlands – was a beach inlet. Among the vegetation it is possible to also see small animals such as squirrels, deer and foxes. These woods are particularly rich of bird species - a large variety of woodpeckers – who carve visible holes in the trees.
